“Online tutoring doesn’t work because students get distracted online.”
It’s an understandable concern — and one that often holds parents back from trying online tuition.
Yes, if a student isn’t guided well, distractions can creep in. But the truth is, that’s no different from what happens in a busy classroom. The key is creating an engaging lesson in which the student simply can't get away with switching off!
Recently on Zoom, one of my students shared their English essay through a document viewer while I annotated it live on screen. As a fast typist, I could comment instantly, highlight phrasing, and refine analysis with them on the spot. It was faster, sharper, and more interactive than relying solely on a paper-and-pen method.
In the right hands, online tutoring isn’t a compromise — it’s an upgrade.
